Knowing God, chapter 2: The people who know their God

Packer contends that contemporary Christians don’t really know God. One can know a great deal about God or about godliness without having that knowledge translated into a knowledge of God.

What effects does knowledge of God have on a man? From the book of Daniel:

  1. Those who know God have great energy for GodDaniel 11:32. In this context, this a reaction to the deeds of the vile person described in v 21.
  2. Those who know God have great thoughts of God. Reading through Daniel’s prayers reveal how he perceived God—Daniel 2:20-22; 9:4,7,9,14
  3. Those who know God show great boldness for God. Daniel and his friends stuck out their necks, fully aware of what the outcome would be if God didn’t intervene.
  4. Those who know God have great contentment in God. Daniel 3:16-18—live or die, they were content.

Do we desire such knowledge of God? First, we must recognise how much we lack knowledge of God. Second, we must seek the Saviour.
