A few days ago, a lady turned up in a public swimming pool in the northern Italian town of Verona wearing a burkini. (Do you wish to purchase one?). The director of the structure had no problem with her being there dressed as she was. However, the (presumably Italian) mothers complained because “she was scaring their children”.
Now, I’m not qualified to discuss the social, cultural and religious ramifications of bikinis vs burkinis, never having worn either. But I will say this: if society has reached a point where children are so used to seeing barely-dressed women that the sight of a fully-clothed one scares them, then said society needs to do some serious re-thinking of its values. By God’s grace I will be a better parent when my turn comes around.
